PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
THEME & TECHNOLOGICAL REVIEW
Using the open brief as a platform, the theme or themes we hope to explore for this
assignment are Telepresence and Telematic art. Telepresence can be described as
a computer-generated environment consisting of interactive simulations and
computer graphics in which a human being experiences being present in a remote
location. The advent of personal computers in combination with the popular use of
the worldwide web has made the world smaller in terms of communication and
contact. Social networks like chat-rooms in the early days to modern day networks
built on complex online applications like Facebook and MySpace, give users a
socio-cyber presence of which most individuals are willing participants. Furthermore,
the willingness of participants (web users) to share or rather exhibit personal items
from thoughts to photos to activities online has further enhanced this socio-cyber
presence.
Using a software called Eyesweb, the group hopes to develop an artefact that
features a different time and space by allowing the live processing of web-video
feeds from two remote locations and times into one that seeks to explore the
aforementioned themes.
POST-PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT
This was riddled with a number of unexpected problems and unfortunately as a
result, the final form of the artefact is video based presented on a DVD instead of
the originally proposed live ‘form’. The main problem was with the software,
Eyesweb. As with a number of web software technology without corporate backing,
bugging issues are not addressed and Eyesweb is full of bugs. Firstly it does not allow
for video to be sent to IP addresses that are dynamic, i.e. on a wireless network and
only static addresses. As you can imagine this is a major blow to the progress of the
work because the web feeds from remote locations are almost certainly going to be
sent via wireless networks. Another issue is that Eyesweb is PC only, infact in Windows
Vista it is not compatible. What all this meant was that for the concept to be
developed to its full potential and presented as faithful as possible to the original,
recorded would have to be used. With this technological setback in mind, the group
set about strengthening the concept to balance the project. The advantage of
using video is clear as it allows for a flawless final piece but this among the live art
faithful is considered cheating and it further reduces the quality of the theme base.
Staying with the Telematic theme, two locations or spaces, ie Times Square and
Piccadilly Circus were used for the locations, theoretically off course. The different
3
times were now day and night with the female subject performing her routine first in
the day and the male second at night. The camera would be set-up at the same
place and angle and so it is safe to say that only one aspect of Telematics was fully
explored – time, as it it essentially the same space. Both sequences were scripted
and the actors were given directions as they performed the moves. The brief was
simply a metropolitan couple too busy for each other and have an argument seen
by others in a public space, although the couple believe they are in the privacy of
their own home. In The female performance would be the base the male to act
upon as therefore was a lot easier to implement.
The male performance presented a few challenges like timing, because in one
particular sequence there is actually physical interaction with both actors. The male
was required to flinch as a jacket was thrown which as you can imagine required a
number of practice and actual takes to get right.
NEW ADDITIONS
In addition to this development, the patches were further modified to process the
video instead of the live feed. As a matter of fact only two computers were now
needed. Computer A, as we have named it, would execute the patch that plays
the earlier recorded video of the female performance along with the live feed of
the male performance. Both the video file and feed are processed as explained in
the proposal with the difference of just the addition of a multimedia file reader
module or block as described by Eyesweb. The combined feed form Computer A
will be sent to another computer, B, running a new patch whose sole function was to
receive a file and output this mix as an Microsoft Audio Video Interleaved or .avi file.
Another significant development to the project was music. The choice of song was
intentional and is direct symbolism for the warring couple who we say are based in
New York. It is ‘What do New York Couples Fight About’ by Morcheeba. Finally, the
video was projected onto a screen in Piccadilly Circus with a busy street scene
added in the background as the video ends.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS
With all the problems encountered, the group is overall proud of the final artefact.
There is clear disappointment in the failure to make this a live project as that would
have enhanced the contextual nature of the work. After all, the module is called
Internet & Network Art and although we used technology normally used for
computer networks to create an artefact, the final form would have been of a
superior quality artistic and aesthetically. By deciding to strengthen the concept
after concluding that the limitations were inevitable, there is a clear demonstration
by the group of its commitment to producing a meaningful piece of work. Should a
similar project be undertaken again, a more detailed and flexible contingency
measure would be drawn up.

CRITICAL EVALUTION:
BRAIMA DAMA JAMES
Research Skills - 8
It is my belief that my research skills in not just this module but the entire third year is
off much improvement on my second and most definitely my first year. The entire
module staff were of enormous help in pointing me in the right direct with swift
responses and challenging me to develop my ideas by applying a number of artistic
principles in my work. This not only benefitted myself, but the entire group’s research
effort.
Contextual Awareness - 5
This area I believe is where I lack and require development. It is, i assume of my nontraditional
art background as I am a musician and Digital Arts is my minor. Its not an
excuse but a mere reason for my honesty.
Synthesis of research material - 9
This was crucial and felt I effectively created and executed every research
objective I created and in so doing was easily able to interpret my research into a
written and practical form
Critical Analysis of subject - 9
I have no problems in this area and believe my work and contribution to the group
write-ups are testament to this
Creativity, originality and innovation – 10
Athough this was group work, it was initially my idea to develop on the theme of
Telematics and as a result belief that my input was central to the development of
the idea.
Application of theory to practice – 8
I would say like the critical analysis above, my skill is demonstrated in the write-ups
that I equally contributed to.
Technical Development – 9
I was also partly responsible for the development of the patches and setting up of
the cameras
Rationality Realisation - 10
I am a great group member and son of a diplomat!
Organisation Time-planning - 7
Much improved as the module went on.
5
Presentation Documentation
It was my responsibility also to format the group write-ups with heading, covers and
screen grabs and believe i excelled.
Overall I presented the idea to the group who agreed and developed the patch
with another group member, as well as format all documents to be handed in.
AMIT-PAL HUNDAL
Research Skills
Research was important, as without it we wouldn’t be able to progress with our work.
The main piece of research I did was to find out what was needed in the patches for
Eyesweb. Before that I researched different aspects of transmitting web cam
footage. I main piece I found was from Living TV’s Most Haunted series. They would
transmit live web-cam footage of what was going on. Overall I felt like I did
contribute to quite a bit of the research but not enough. 6/10
Contextual Awareness
Contextual Awareness was very important, as Eyesweb was an influential piece in
our work. We planned a few things and that was when we found out that we had
Eyesweb to work with. Developing different patches and trying to work round any
difficulties we came across was at times frustrating but I feel like that if given the
chance to play around with Eyesweb further then we could of done something a lot
more different. 9/10
Synthesis of research material
The bringing together of research material was something I was not part of very
much. I did involve myself init however I would update the blog with our progress.
4/10
Critical Analysis of subject
I feel that the subject was very effective. We worked hard on it and when we saw
the final piece I felt a piece of satisfaction, as it looked great and worked well. Also
as I had put a lot of effort into the making of the artefact I feel that it worked
extremely well. 8/10
Creativity, originality and innovation
Creating the final artefact was no easy task. In the end I believe that we have an
original and creative artefact. It is also innovative as there is not much of this sort of
thing out there. Few people have experimented with Eyesweb but our idea of
incorporating it into a social network is really innovative as nothing like that exists.
Our artefact idea changed many times as we worked with Eyesweb. We found out
different things we could do and worked these new discoveries into the artefact.
6/10
6
Application of theory to practice
Our first idea was to make a feature for online social networks by using video to
have people in other people’s rooms. This idea soon proved to be unreasonable as
it proved to be difficult to make a site to integrate live video and mix it with another
piece of live footage. Keeping to the idea of people in other locations with other
people we started to use Eyesweb and finally was able to make our artefact of two
people in different locations in one place. 7/10
Technical Development
Technical development was important, as we needed to be familiar with Eyesweb. I
had looked into it and developed the patches, which were being used. Another
form of technical development was trying to get Eyesweb to work with our laptops.
Eyesweb would work but the main problem with using our laptops was that they
didn’t have a stable network connection. We discovered that we needed a stable
network in order to send video over the network. This meant we were unable to use
our laptops. 10/10
Rationality & Realisation
We always kept in mind what we were able to and what we were not able to do.
We kept this rationality. I would keep focusing on seeing what was always possible. I
never lost focus on what we tried to do and aimed to take the idea as far as
possible. 7/10
Organisation & Time-planning
Organisation was important, as we had set times when we would meet and we
would need to get as much as possible done in the few hours we had. When doing
the work we never planned what we would do exactly we would work on it till we
were done for the day. 9/10
Presentation & Documentation
Presentation was something I enjoyed preparing. Throughout the period of time,
which we were trying to develop our artefact, we filmed parts of what we were
doing. So for the presentation I used this footage and compiled it with fresh footage
describing directly what we were doing and how we did it to make a video
presentation. This also counted as documenting our work as whenever we felt we
made progress on what we did we would film it and blog the actual video. 10/10

MICHELLE ANDREWS
The concepts idea I my at the beginning of this project it was as group coming up
with an idea which involve internet and network , was quit hard until we gathered
7
are own ideas together to come up with a project we could learned form and
succeed in doing, or if it couldn’t be crate explained who to go about make it.
During the past year digital technology has rinsing, and there new internet
technology which allows people to interactive with other. Part my role in this group
was to complete research on, eyes web, blue screen, social network sits. I also
research what is the most visited used social network site, the result was, facebook,
myspace and ether you tube.
From that research e we thought that it would be best if we create social network,
which allows people to share personal space via social network site.
What my job role was
My role during the making of this project, was most on the design part, during the first
couple of works I was reaching experimental video which explodes Telemetric art
and Telepresence. There was one main music director which I researching Michel,
Gondry were the music is looks like they are share the same space. As we are
working in a big group we divided the work load, I would basically work on:
Michelle
Developing the blog
Filming possible local
Taking picture s and place them on the blog
I also filmed most of the making of when we are work on eyes web
Filmed when people are presented the concept idea
Performed in the practices video of use trying to create two feed in one
space.
C0-write the script with Christiana
Co written the concept analysis development of concept idea
Helped development the idea with the group and organising meeting time
Fig 1
EG I could be in my bed room and Christiania could be in her room but with eyes
web we could interactive with each other, by not actual being in the same space.
8
The basic idea for this project idea was t to convert two or maybe three different
time in space in to one to create a social network , were people interactive with
every socials with each other but not they are not actual being in the same space
Eyesweb software
what Eyewebs can actual do, we discovered that we could delete a background
of one of our live feeds and places it with another feed , at first it was my idea that
could use the blue or green screen to great the effect that we could projects two
how are in differemets in to one feed which would present two people sharing one
space.
But me was then informed that there is a much better, easy, and would not have to
end up edited if we could just use Eyeswebs for this project.
The plan was to have to live feeds blending in to one, so one would capture the
background and the other t would film the scene.
I have learned a lot from this project, how to create live feeds in eyes webs thought
creating the patches. I have also learned that you could export video out of
Eyesweb as AVI file and imports AVI a video as well.

Morcheeba - What New York Couples Fight About

For our project we as a group decided that it would be best if we could, add music playing in the background to create those special effects. The song that we have choosing is a good choice because it is telling a story.

The track is Morcheeba - What New York Couples Fight About

the sound is prefect for our video

the artefact

As part of artefact we thought that it would be better if we film Christiania part, should be pre-recorded of her walking in the room and then placing her shopping down, and have Dama feed live of this, part, we found out that we could export out of export in black and white it would have to RGB.

The scene was scripted

exporting from eyes web

There has been a change to the format of our idea; we discovered that we would only need one webcam. The plan was to record one feed, without the background in eyes web and then it would export the video as avi and place back in to eyes web with the live feed playing.

TELECOLLABORATIVE ART PROJECTS

From 1975 through 1977 artists Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz developed a series of projects under a heading they called "Aesthetic Research in Telecommunications," 1975. Among these projects was the Satellite Arts Project that addressed a multitude of telecollaborative arts and virtual space performance issues that had never been genuinely tested or even experienced.

When I read and saw this I got really existed because it is the kind of thing we are trying to do but we are using different technology and programs.

VOYEUR WEB

Tina LaPorta

VOYEUR_WEB collapses the private and public spheres by connecting the blueprint of an apartment to images from webcams that open a view into the apartment's rooms. During the month of July 2001, VOYEUR_WEB linked to live webcams. The links have been replaced with an archive version of the original work.

I thought that this was a good example of art voyeurism, I liked that fact that she used web cams in the project and how it was done in personal space. Her ideas are quit similar to ours.

Concept Proposal

Concept proposal

Using the open brief as a platform, the theme or themes we hope to explore for this assignment are Telepresence and Telematic art. Telepresence can be described as a computer-generated environment consisting of interactive simulations and computer graphics in which a human being experiences being present in a remote location. The advent of personal computers in combination with the popular use of the worldwide web has made the world smaller in terms of communication and contact. Social networks like chat-rooms in the early days to modern day networks built on complex online applications like Facebook and MySpace, give users a socio-cyber presence of which most individuals are willing participants. Furthermore, the willingness of participants (web users) to share or rather exhibit personal items from thoughts to photos to activities online has further enhanced their social presence online. Artists like Bruce Naumann in the 70s to more recently; Eduaudo Kac and Danny Rozin have experimented with Telematics in intriguing fashion. Our concept hopes to carry on this tradition by implementing the most commonly used technology in existence today, Computer networks. Kac states that the role of the artist in interactive art is not to encode messages unidirectionally but to define the parameters of the open-ended context in which experiences will unfold... An art that addresses the cultural, material and philosophical conditions of our time must manifest itself with the means of our time.”

The artefact will consist of a video composite showing two subjects in the same space at the same time, interacting with the environment. This environment is a bedroom, but the two subjects will be in two different locations and their “presence” in the bedroom together is the result of video feed blending via software called Eyesweb. This program allows multiple video inputs from remote locations that are then manipulated accordingly to produce a desired effect. In the case of our artefact we are trying to make two distant locations and their respective subjects present in a third location as if they were actually present in the same space and time. By combining these two locations we hope to continue in the tradition of existing social networks that dissolve geographical boundaries. Paul Sermon’s Telematic Dreaming (Fig 1) and subsequently Telematic Vision is of huge influence to our proposal thus artefact.

teledreamin.gif
Fig 1: Paul Sermon’s Telematic Dreaming

teledreamin

The setup for this artefact involves two web cams and three computers, all with Eyesweb running and two humans as the subject. Each web cam will be connected to a computer and situated in two different physical spaces. As the ultimate goal is to combine personal spaces, these locations will preferably be the subjects bedroom as this represents the most private and personal space of people. Both cameras will be transmitting a feed of the subject’s activities in the bedroom to the third computer in another location. This is made possible as Eyesweb has the capability to transmit a video (or audio feed) to another computer by sending the signal to a remote computer’s IP address. Therefore as you can imagine, this will be done twice, simultaneously for both subjects. The capabilities and potentials of Eyesweb are exploited by user created patches. These are a set of computer algorithms that consist of elements that execute different functions (e.g. display video feed, transmit to network, change picture blur or blend video.) that can work in parallel or serially. As you can imagine, the more compound the patch the more complex the function. At present we have created two basic patches for the three machines as the two remote machines will execute identical patches.

Live feed/remote computer patch: PATCH A

Patch1

This is a web cam feed then run through a threshold/movement analysis algorithm. This captures the first frame as an empty black one. Any subsequent movement within that frame becomes white and is seen.

Blending patch: PATCH B

Patch2

As the name suggests, this is a patch made up of algorithms that blend both feeds by reducing the alpha channels of both feeds. As both feeds of PATCH A contain only black and white information (black being background, white being subject) there are no transparency issues. This video blend function is then controlled by a slider that controls the amount of each feed is displayed. However if for logistic reasons or otherwise, the live performance and implementation of this is not possible, Eyesweb also allows us to transmit recorded video. This will give us more control over the production of the artefact because we can choreograph each set of movements and capture this on video separately allowing for us the artists to capture the best performance of the subjects. Both the videos can then be edited, blended and the composite manipulated in any way we see fit.

Towards the future however, it is hoped that an interactive version of this video installation will be produced for our degree show; an installation that will involve a pair of physical markers and audio instructions in two different spaces for two participants to complete a choreographed set of moves. In form, it aims to be similar to RePossesed by Nick Haeffer. This is a travelling exhibition offering the chance to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, which seeks to confront the power relations that exist between audiences and moving image authors. Although both these pieces are different in function, the implementation of technology to produce an artefact that demonstrates telematic relationships between subjects, time and place, make both works similar.

As a group we are up for this challenge although with only limited resources to be able to produce this. As a result, the video work to be produced for this module will lack audience interaction but encourage participation on an emotional level. The strength of the technology, namely Eyesweb as well as the idea of telematics, social networking and the sharing of personal space, make up for the lack of certain aesthetic values. It is hoped that at the end of the fourteen weeks a work will be produced that is of a technically and artistic high value that clearly demonstrates an understanding of the way networks can be used to construct meaning as well as show an awareness to emerging technologies and an ability to create an artwork that covers more than one physical site.

At the very least at the end of the module and the degree, the group aims to produce an artefact that exhibits its collective understanding of network art, encompassing telematics, telerobotics, wireless technologies, locative media, social networks and data visualisation, while applying critical theory to every stage of the research and production process. Appropriately documenting individual and collaborative research and production developments via blogs is another of the groups core aims for this assignment and module.

Eyes Web Devlelopment

On Friday we had a go at eyes web again but this time we came up with a diferent result. Instead of the black background with white imaging we recieved live footage in black and white and the background removed of the other footage was fed into it. This gave us the idea of being able to tell who the viewer is and who is actually in the room. We developed few new storyboard ideas thanks to this. - Amit Hundal

Interactivity in eyes web

The whole idea of be interactive with someone who is not the same place as you is very weird but is very possible to complete , we use to film with a blue screen, like in forest Gump when he meet a died president, in the making of it shows that that they are using two different footage. This could have easy being created in eyes web which would allow you to feed from more than one live footage and old footage. By knowing that information the group then decide to create the cyberspace in gray scale, it would give it a more cyberspace that unique push.

Clip of the making of Frost Gump Example coming soon

Virtual space

fgbscreen

After exploring the Technology of Eyes webs my knowledge of what we could has expended. The whole of creative side behind cyberspace is just unbelievable. I don’t think that our idea has been then before it would be a challenge if succeeded in our aim. The overall project would open question two the member in cyberspace. Virtual space is become more like reality; virtual character is created by using real people body shape figure.

Special effect video coming soon.

Nowa ksiazka (New Book)

From what I have experienced watching De Zbigniew Rybczynski’s ‘Tango’, I wanted to take a look at more of his work. I found that there was so much more of his work to be inspired from. One in particular is ‘Nowa ksiazka’ (New Book) 1975. The film is split in to nine screens, and there is something different happening in each one. The characters in the film go into one screen and out into another, but you don’t know where they are going until they appear in of the other screens. The sound track to the film is deliberately bad to the point that it almost sounds good in relation to the footage shown (if that makes sense). I found the narrative and the way it was looped extremely clever.

comfort zone

“A comfort zone may result when the mental concept that (a) person(s) has/have about something and actual reality of it, are not congruent with one another. A classic example to take would be”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comfort_zone

The whole point of the this project is to explore sociology of people behave by using cyberspace . e.g “if two random people were in standing face to face exactly close one is more lightly to move back because they we feel unconformable’ how weird is that if me could me it look like that ?

Let's Tango

I watched the film ‘Tango’ by De Zbigniew Rybczynski. I thought this was a very clever and interesting piece of work. The film showed numerous clips on the screen simultaneously, each with their own interacting scenes. I watched the film more than once to see whether I could remember all the characters that appeared from start to finish, and to see if I could keep track of them throughout each clip. I found that it was almost impossible because all the character are interacting all at the same time, in the same space, oblivious to one another and to what else was going on around them. The loops are timed so well that there is always a new character that walks into the room to distract you. Furthermore, the sound tracks were all timed to perfection. I loved the way that this piece of work had been put together, it was very inspirational. Take a look at the video.

Eyesweb use and inspiration

By Dama James - A large part of my research for this project has been on the theoretical aspect of the combination of cyberspace and personal space.

However having been introduced to Eyesweb, I have scanned the net for projects that incoperate its use and among other the following videos are inspiring.

Book Of Sand

The ‘Book of Sand’ by Jorge Luis Borges and the subsequent short story ‘…thy rope of sands…’ written by George Herbert (1593-1623) base their ideas on infinity, there is no beginning to the book or an ending. The pages are numbed with odd numbers to portray this ideal. Their work supposedly includes puzzles or some kind of code that you can attempt to crack and solve. These texts give good examples of how a narrative can be used in a different way.

Eyesweb

Initial research led us to think about using blue-screen and live web cam footage or even recorded footage. In the early weeks we were shown a program called EyesWeb by Mitja so we decided to take another look at it. After being shown how it works it became clear that it would be a lot simpler to use this program instead of filming it and using blue-screen. What we plan to do is use two live feeds in separate locations. So by subtracting the background in one feed and combining it with the other feed what we will have is one feed integrated with the other. For example if someone was standing in one room with a live web cam feed and the other web cam feed is of a bedroom then by removing the background in the persons live feed and then integrating it with the other fees then we will have this person in the room even thought they are not really there. http://www.infomus.dist.unige.it/EywMain.html - Link to EyesWeb Project Amit Hundal

Videophone Installation

I’ve been looking into the work of Sobell and her ideas of Videophone Installation. The following is one of her artifacts.

In London, Manchester, and Santa Monica (1977), Sobell placed a telephone on the ledge outside the gallery window, she sat inside facing away from the window with another telephone. A closed-circuit camera was trained on her face, and another on the faces of the public as they approached the phone. Split-screen monitors faced her and the public, with one side of the screen devoted to her image, the other side devoted to the participant. By picking up the telephone on the ledge, participants could also talk to her.

It Takes Four

Let me tell you a bit about what the “Fantastic Four” have been up to, yes, by that I mean the group. We started experimenting by filming my bedroom. We filmed Dama walking into my room and putting some of his personal items onto my dresser. The aim of this exercise was to discover exactly how much space we were working with, so that we could edit the footage accordingly when using (the) blue screen. We also documented the filming process with a video camera so that we could use it for our group blog.

Eduardo Kac & Nina Sobell - Inspiration

Read Eduardo Kac's Telepresence Art, where he suggests that Telecoms art is a new communicative form of art.

In 2007, its hardly new but its obvious that the web presented contemporary, and especially experimental artists, a new medium for expression.

Another bit of research carried out was reading up on Nina Sobell's ParkBench from the seventies and VirtuAlice. Emily also commented on how their work inspired the development of "new technologies, including a wireless telerobotic video camera for streaming video to the Web from remote locations." - a web cam basically! Again, laughable as it seems, its interesting to note how art, however indirectly, influenced technology and vice versa. Interesting. - By Dama James

Test Video - More Detail

The idea behind the whole idea was to have it be like a Webcam community. So in each room we should be able to interact with one of the other rooms. This is where the laptop comes in. Each room should have a laptop in it so the person in the room can look at it and see their own room with someone else in it. The same goes for the person in the other room. Currently this idea is still under development. - Amit Hundal

Tracey Emin

My Bed by Tracey Emin was what inspired me to generate the group’s fist concept idea. It seem really weird but cool at the same time, that some would just want to display there most private space and personal things in that way to the world. It was so shocking that it generated a lot of media coverage. I think now people are much more open to the idea of letting the world look in to there daily life’s style. People tell the world though online communities everything about themselves such as face book. I thought to myself why don’t they start let people in to there personal space what ever it maybe, e.g. bed room.

Internet and Network Art Project Idea

Drawing on the idea of Telematics and Telematic art in general, our project will involve the combination of personal and cyberspace.

The project will consist of video or live web cam feed of an individuals bedroom together with a subject, preferably human, within this environment. The footage of the individual will almost certainly be a video filmed on a blue screen. We a currently deciding whether to use a live web cam feed and researching how we can introduce a video overlay on top of this feed. if possible we hope to mix two live feeds. However as we do not necessarily have the facilities and time to implement this we will work with recorded video.

The overall aim is to create an engaging and interesting artifact/project that will explore and showcase people's modern day fascination with social networks and information sharing. The Fantastic Four invites the viewer to view a subject, present in time in another place at the same time.

Please feel free to comment and advise as you see fit. Wish us luck.
