Internet and Network Art Project Idea

Drawing on the idea of Telematics and Telematic art in general, our project will involve the combination of personal and cyberspace.

The project will consist of video or live web cam feed of an individuals bedroom together with a subject, preferably human, within this environment. The footage of the individual will almost certainly be a video filmed on a blue screen. We a currently deciding whether to use a live web cam feed and researching how we can introduce a video overlay on top of this feed. if possible we hope to mix two live feeds. However as we do not necessarily have the facilities and time to implement this we will work with recorded video.

The overall aim is to create an engaging and interesting artifact/project that will explore and showcase people's modern day fascination with social networks and information sharing. The Fantastic Four invites the viewer to view a subject, present in time in another place at the same time.

Please feel free to comment and advise as you see fit. Wish us luck.

Test Video - More Detail

The idea behind the whole idea was to have it be like a Webcam community. So in each room we should be able to interact with one of the other rooms. This is where the laptop comes in. Each room should have a laptop in it so the person in the room can look at it and see their own room with someone else in it. The same goes for the person in the other room. Currently this idea is still under development. - Amit Hundal

Let's Tango

I watched the film ‘Tango’ by De Zbigniew Rybczynski. I thought this was a very clever and interesting piece of work. The film showed numerous clips on the screen simultaneously, each with their own interacting scenes. I watched the film more than once to see whether I could remember all the characters that appeared from start to finish, and to see if I could keep track of them throughout each clip. I found that it was almost impossible because all the character are interacting all at the same time, in the same space, oblivious to one another and to what else was going on around them. The loops are timed so well that there is always a new character that walks into the room to distract you. Furthermore, the sound tracks were all timed to perfection. I loved the way that this piece of work had been put together, it was very inspirational. Take a look at the video.

Eduardo Kac & Nina Sobell - Inspiration

Read Eduardo Kac's Telepresence Art, where he suggests that Telecoms art is a new communicative form of art.

In 2007, its hardly new but its obvious that the web presented contemporary, and especially experimental artists, a new medium for expression.

Another bit of research carried out was reading up on Nina Sobell's ParkBench from the seventies and VirtuAlice. Emily also commented on how their work inspired the development of "new technologies, including a wireless telerobotic video camera for streaming video to the Web from remote locations." - a web cam basically! Again, laughable as it seems, its interesting to note how art, however indirectly, influenced technology and vice versa. Interesting. - By Dama James
